Live From New York- It’s Saturday Night!

snlcast

You’ve probably heard of it before. Saturday Night Live. SNL. It’s one of the most popular late-night shows since its start in 1975. The number of comedians, musicians, and actors who have graced its stage is countless. Many of these stars have shaped the entertainment industry into what it is today. Stars like Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Eddie Murphy, Andy Samberg, Dana Carvey, Mike Meyers, Steve Martin, Bill Hader, Will Ferrell, and so many more are just some of the many people who have been involved in this show. ┬áThe picture above, a publicity photo for the show, shows many of the actors from the early years of the show. You’ve probably heard a lot of these names before, because most of these SNL stars went on to become successful movie stars and comedians.

SNL at its heart is a skit show. They have a few recurring skits, like Wayne’s World, a show recorded by two slackers (Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey) who discuss rock music and some politics. The skit ran frequently throughout the 80s but ended as Meyers and Carvey no longer act on the show, although they’ve both returned to host episodes before. Another recurring skit that still appears in each episode today, in the 43rd season, is the Weekend Update, a parody news update show. It is the longest running skit in the show’s history, appearing in every episode. Originally starring Chevy Chase, many different stars have taken the position as parody news anchor, from Jimmy Fallon to Tina Fey to Amy Poeler. The skit currently stars Micahel Che and Colin Jost. Weekend Update is my personal favorite skit.

The current 2017-18 cast consists of Beck Bennett, Aidy Bryant, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Leslie Jones, Colin Jost, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Alex Moffat, Luke Null, Chris Redd, and Melissa Villasenor. The current cast does many great skits, like Za, Haunted Elevator, and parodies of game shows like Family Feud, The Price is Right, and Jeopardy.

If you are looking for all of the best skits to watch or re-watch, here are some skits to visit. Check out the following skits: Olympia Cafe, Celebrity Jeopardy, Black Jeopardy, Bill Swerski’s Super Fans, Wayne’s World, Weekend Update, The 2016 Presidential Debate parodies, Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker, Adam Sandler’s Opera Man, and so many more. With forty years of comedy under its belt, Saturday Night Live remains one of the best places to get a good laugh. I hope that the show’s legacy can continue to grow, with more seasons continuing to come forth.
