Careers in Music

I’ve always personally enjoyed the idea of having a career in the music industry. When most people think of a career in music, they think along the lines of becoming a pop star like Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift. But realistically, there is a whole spectrum of careers in the music industry to choose from.

Music Performance. This would pertain more to Ed Sheeran and other megastars, but don’t worry, because you don’t have to be bursting with singing talent to excel in this line of work. Music performance can mean playing in an orchestra or other public ensembles, like the Lima Symphony Orchestra. You could play a number of musical instruments, like the trumpet, percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, and many others.

Music Education. This one is kind of self explanatory. It’s teaching music. It could mean teaching choir like Ms. Klein or instrumental music like Mr. Stein, pictured above. But along with teaching music at a high school or elementary school, you can also teach at colleges. Maybe, you could even be the person that you learn from to get degrees in different music-related fields.

Music Business. These are the jobs at recording companies and radio stations. These are people working behind the scenes on soundboards and doing the recording work for famous artists. Or, maybe they are even running the whole place!

Whatever your musical interests are, you can consider these paths as options for your future career.
