What’s Happening in Texas?

What is a hurricane? A hurricane is a storm with violent winds, usually found near the Caribbean. On August 25, 2017, Texas had been hit by the worst hurricane since 2005’s hurricane, Wilma. People were given warnings on August 17 about the hurricane. As the hurricane became closer, they realized the intensity of the hurricane was bigger than expected. On August 23, Texas’s governor, Greg Abbott, declared a state of emergency for 30 counties and there were mandatory evacuations issued. On the night of August 24, they classified the hurricane as a level 4 hurricane.

What damage did the storm do? The amount of rainfall that fell was about 51.88 inches. This caused a lot of flooding and destruction of houses. This is the most rainfall a hurricane has ever produced. Approximately 300,000 people had no electricity, and property damage looks like it could cost billions of dollars. There are 38 confirmed deaths, but one of the cops from around the area said he was worried how many more bodies they will find when the flooding goes down. About 48,700 houses were affected. 1,000 houses were completely destroyed, about 17,000 had a lot of damage, and 32,000 had minor damage. 13,000 rescues have been made around the Houston area.

The damages is going to take a lot of time to fix and cost billions of dollars. How are they going to fix houses and pay for the damage? JJ Watt, Houston Texans defensive end, has set up a fund to help pay for the damages. He has raised more than 10 million dollars. Also helping pay was Microsoft, who is donating $100,000 to damages, Airbnb is waiving the service fees for those who have checked in before September 25, and many more businesses are donating. Many athletes are donating money for every home run they hit or catch they have to Houston. They cancelled the Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans game for the players to go help with the hurricane damage or be with their families. This is great to see everyone come together to help Houston.
