Athletic Superstitions

As we watch the big stars play sports on TV, we are easily impressed with their skills that they have. You might have wondered how they prepared for those big games and if they have any superstitions. A famous Swedish tennis player, Bjö rn Borg, had a superstition of growing a beard and wearing the same shirt for an annual tournament. These superstitions are said to have helped him win an amazing five straight Wimbledon titles from 1976 through 1980. Many other athletes have also taken on his superstition of growing out a beard and not shaving for their big games. Even many NFL players have also taken on his superstition.

Another well-known tennis player, Serena Williams, is said that she also has some superstitions. It is said that she has to bring her shower sandals to the court and also she has to tie her shoes a certain way for each match. It is also said that if she is winning in a tournament she will not change her socks and will keep the same ones on for the whole match. Many professional athletes have superstitions, but I was curious if anyone in high school had any superstitions. So, I asked some students in high school, but many of them said no. Raegan Cupp, pictured above, says that she paints her nails green before every meet for good luck! Do you have any superstitions?
