Many people enjoy having cake, especially when it comes to special days like birthdays and weddings. There are many different flavors of cake, along with some different types. While most people can tell the difference between the different flavors, some people do not realize that there is a difference in types. We decided to take a look into some of the different kinds of cake.

Basic cake recipes are referred to as butter cakes. In this kind of cake, there is always baking powder or baking soda to make it rise while in the oven. Along with that, there is also cream butter, sugar, eggs, flour, and sometimes another liquid such as milk. White cake, chocolate cake, and yellow cake typically fall into this category. Pound cake is a relative to butter cake.

Sponge cakes rely on whipped eggs or whipped egg whites in order to riseĀ and don’t contain baking soda or baking powder. Some consist of eggs, sugar, flour, and on certain occasions, butter. Sponge cakes are referred to and may taste a bit different depending on where you are. Here in the U.S., we have angel food cakes. In Italy and France, they are called genoise, which can also be baked in a jelly roll pan and rolled into a roulade. Other types of European sponge cakes include ladyfingers and various forms of biscuits.

There are also a few kinds of cake that fall into an in-between zone, where they are not quite butter cakes or sponge cakes. Carrot cake and red velvet cake both fall into this category. Let us know in the comments below what your favorite kind of cake is!
